Fall Home Maintenance

It may still be hot outside, but school is back in session and now is the perfect time to get your home maintenance done for fall. There are a lot of different resources out there for what you should do for your home in the fall, so we’ve chosen five that will make sure your home is safe and dry!

Schedule a Chimney Cleaning and Heating System Maintenance
You may not use your heating system for months, and your chimney at all, but now is a great time to get them checked out. By scheduling this now you’ll beat the rush when the first cold snap hits, and you’ll know your home will be warm and toasty!

Clean Gutters and Downspouts
There may not be leaves clogging your gutters yet, but that means it’s a great time to make sure your gutters are clean, in-good-condition and draining properly. Gutters with poor drainage or that will get clogged easily when leaves start to fall can cause serious damage to your roof and home’s structure!

Clean Your Dryer Vents
Did you know that home clothes dryer fires cause an estimated $35 million in property loss a year, and more clothes dryer fires occur in the fall and winter months? This is because lint build-up in the vents can spark due to static electricity, which increases in cool, dry weather. Clean your dryer vent now to decrease the chances of a home fire and increase your dryer’s efficiency.

Check Your Safety Devices
Safety devices, like smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers, should be tested at least once a year. Make this a part of your annual fall maintenance by testing your detectors and replacing batteries as needed and replacing any expired fire extinguishers.

Make Sure Your Roof is in Good Shape
Summer months are a roofer’s busy season, so as the weather cools down it is a perfect time to get your choice of the roofer. Check your roof yourself for obvious signs of damage like missing or lose shingles, curling or buckling shingles, dark streaks, or if you went through a severe storm this summer and still haven’t had an inspection for damage.
