Storm and Hail Damage Roof Repair in Austin

After the Storm: Austin Roof Damage, Insurance, and Repairs

Hail season in Central Texas runs roughly March through June, with fall storms too, and Austin sits squarely in the path. A single cell can bruise every west-facing slope from Circle C Ranch to Wells Branch. This page covers what to do in the first two days, how to tell hail from wind from ordinary wear, how the insurance side works in Texas, and how KangaRoof handles storm damage roof repair in Austin from our office in Round Rock, about 25 to 40 minutes away. If water is coming in right now, skip the reading and call (512) 388-7663; the line answers 24/7.

The first 48 hours after a storm

  • Stay off the roof. A wet roof after a storm is dangerous, and walking on hail-bruised shingles can make the damage worse. Everything below can be done from the ground and the attic.
  • Look for water inside. Ceiling stains, drips at light fixtures, wet insulation in the attic. If you find any, move belongings, catch the water, and call us for tarping.
  • Read the soft metals. Dents in gutters, downspouts, window screens, mailboxes, and the fins on your AC condenser record hail size and direction better than any memory of the storm. Photograph them.
  • Check the yard. Shingle pieces, granules piled at downspout exits, and broken limbs all tell the story.
  • Photograph everything with dates. Wide shots of each side of the house, close-ups of damage, and any interior stains.
  • Get a professional inspection before you call your insurance company. Filing a claim for damage that does not reach your deductible can count against you with some carriers. A free inspection tells you whether you have a claim worth filing.

Our post on what hail damage actually looks like on a roof walks through the ground-level check in detail.

Hail damage vs wind damage on Austin roofs

Hail

Hail leaves a random scatter of soft, dark bruises where granules have been knocked loose and the fiberglass mat shows through. Damage is heaviest on the slopes facing the storm and is usually spread across the whole slope rather than clustered. Widespread bruising on multiple slopes is how Austin roofs get totaled by insurance, because bruised shingles lose their sun protection and fail early even when they are not leaking today.

Wind

Wind lifts, creases, and removes shingles, starting at ridges, rakes, corners, and anywhere the seal strip has already weakened with age. It is localized. A dozen creased shingles along one ridge is a repair.

Wear that is not storm damage

Blistering, uniform granule loss, and cracking from age look different from hail and are not covered by insurance. On a 1960s Allandale ranch on its third roof, or a 2002 Avery Ranch home with original shingles, an adjuster will look hard at whether the roof was already failing. That is why a truthful inspection before you file matters, and why our guide to repair vs replacement after storm damage is worth reading before the adjuster arrives.

Free storm inspection with photos

Every KangaRoof storm inspection is free, in person, and documented. We walk the roof, photograph each slope, mark test squares where hail hits are counted, check flashing, vents, and pipe boots, and look in the attic for water entry. You get the photos and a written summary whether you hire us or not, and if the roof does not have claim-worthy damage we tell you that and leave you with a baseline report for the next storm. When it does, the same documentation is formatted for your adjuster. We inspect across Austin, from Great Hills and Anderson Mill in the north to Shady Hollow and Circle C Ranch in the south, and out to Steiner Ranch and the Lakeway and Bee Cave area.

Insurance claim help and the Texas deductible law

Texas homeowners choose their own roofer. Your carrier can suggest one, but the decision is yours. Here is how a claim works with KangaRoof: you file with your carrier, we provide the photo documentation, and we meet the adjuster at your home to walk the roof together so nothing gets missed. If the adjuster's scope leaves out items the roof actually needs, such as code-required components or flashing, we submit a supplement with the evidence. Then the approved scope and the work we do match.

The deductible law. Since 2019, Texas law (HB 2102) has made it illegal for a roofer to waive, absorb, or pay your deductible. Any contractor offering a free roof or promising to cover your deductible is asking you to participate in insurance fraud, and carriers may ask for proof you paid it. Our posts on whether insurance will pay for your roof, what a roof insurance deductible is, and why roof claims get denied in Texas cover the details, and the full Texas roof insurance claim guide walks through the whole process.

Emergency tarping when water is coming in

A hole from a limb, a stripped section of shingles, or a leak that will not wait is an emergency, and our 24/7 emergency roof repair line exists for exactly that. The first job is to stop the water: we secure the roof with emergency tarping over the damaged area so no more water gets into the decking, insulation, and drywall. Stabilizing the roof buys time for the insurance process and for a permanent repair done properly instead of rushed.

Repair or replace after a storm

Not every storm totals a roof, and we will not push a replacement your roof does not need. A handful of wind-creased shingles, a bruised slope on an otherwise sound roof, or a punctured section from debris is a repair, quoted as a guaranteed fixed price. Widespread hail bruising across multiple slopes, or storm damage on a roof that was already at the end of its life, is a replacement, and usually an insurance one. Age matters here: 1990s and 2000s suburban roofs in Wells Branch, Anderson Mill, and Circle C Ranch are often near the end of the 20 to 30 year lifespan architectural shingles typically get, so a storm can be the sensible time to replace rather than patch. If you go that route, ask about UL 2218 Class 4 impact-resistant shingles; many insurers offer a premium discount for them, so ask your carrier.

What the timeline looks like

  • Day of the storm: tarp active leaks, photograph, and do not sign anything on your doorstep.
  • Within days: free KangaRoof inspection with photos and a written summary.
  • If there is a claim: you file, we document, the adjuster visits, we meet them on site, the scope gets approved, and we supplement if needed.
  • Repair or replacement: scheduled after approval, with a guaranteed price for anything outside the claim.
  • Final walkthrough: photos of the finished work and the paperwork your carrier needs to release the final payment.

After a big Austin hail event the whole city calls at once, so inspections and materials can take longer than usual.

Austin Storm Damage Roof Repair FAQ

How do I know if hail damaged my roof?

Check the ground first: dents in gutters, downspouts, window screens, and AC fins, plus granules at downspout exits and shingle pieces in the yard. On the roof, hail leaves soft dark bruises scattered across the slopes facing the storm. A free KangaRoof inspection confirms it with photos.

Should I call my insurance company or a roofer first?

Get a free inspection first. It tells you whether the damage is likely to exceed your deductible and whether it is storm damage or age. Filing a claim that goes nowhere can count against you with some carriers. Once you know, you file and we provide the documentation.

Can KangaRoof pay my deductible?

No, and neither can anyone else. Texas HB 2102 (2019) makes it illegal for a roofer to waive or pay your deductible. A contractor offering to do so is offering insurance fraud. We help you document the damage and work with your adjuster instead.

How fast can you tarp my roof in Austin?

Our emergency line answers 24/7 and active leaks get priority. We come from Round Rock, about 25 to 40 minutes from most Austin neighborhoods. Call (512) 388-7663 the moment you see water inside.

Will insurance cover storm damage repair or replacement?

Usually, when the damage comes from a sudden storm rather than age or neglect. Texas policies generally cover hail and wind, but your deductible, whether the policy pays replacement cost or actual cash value, and how quickly you file all affect what you receive. Our insurance process guide explains the details.
